These two terms are used interchangeably, but there are differences between the two treatments.

Relationship counseling is shorter-term and goal-oriented, addressing concrete life challenges.

This approach focuses on a specific obstacle the couples are experiencing, with treatment lasting from 12 to 20 sessions. Your relationship counselor will guide you in solving the problem together and learning proper coping strategies and communication skills.

Meanwhile, couples therapy tends to be longer-term and treats mental health conditions impacting the relationship. The treatment can have more than 20 sessions, depending on the number and complexity of issues.

  • Major life adjustments
  • Blended families
  • Emotional distance
  • Parenting conflicts
  • Financial challenges
  • Responsibility disagreements
  • Future planning

Manage miscommunications and expectations before relationships can worsen.

Romantic relationships are a great source of comfort and companionship, but they are also a great source of conflict and stress. Conflicts are an unavoidable part of relationships, unfortunately, not many of us are taught how to have healthy conflicts growing up.

A counselor in Spokane Counseling Hub can help you:

We experience disagreements when our needs are unmet or at odds with each other. These disagreements can be about in-laws, parenting, finances, or that one incident that still bothers the other.

When you and your partner have the same fight repeatedly, a counselor can offer a no-judgment zone. They will guide you with objective insights as a neutral third party and provide tools for constructive communication and conflict resolution.

Does your partner get defensive when you bring up something they donโ€™t like? Do you find yourself tuning out when you feel the conversation is out of your hands? Negative behaviors create a hostile environment that causes anxiety, resentment, and low self-esteem. Sarcasm, constant criticism, and shaming are some of these behaviors that stress and alienate the partner.

A relationship counselor can bring these negative behaviors to light and introduce skills towards mutual respect, emotional intimacy, and relationship growth.

Because relationship counseling is a short-term and goal-focused treatment, it nips issues in the bud before they can escalate into lowering intimacy, creating dependency, and breaking the trust and safety couples feel in their relationships.

Relationship counseling empowers you and your partner with skills in boundaries, constructive communication, and conflict resolution for other unavoidable conflicts later on in life.

Spokane Counseling Hub offers emotionally focused therapy (EFT) as part of our relationship counseling services.

EFT helps people understand their attachment styles and how insecure attachments can create negative relationship patterns. This evidence-based approach aims to replace negative patterns with positive ones for more secure emotional bonds

In 12-20 sessions (depending on the complexity of the concerns), the following steps of EFT can be expected during relationship counseling:

The counselor learns about the coupleโ€™s conflict and perspectives.

Identify negative interactions and emotions contributing to the conflict related to their attachment styles. In short, we identify where each partner is coming from and why. These emotions, coming from the truth of the heart, are reframed to what they really are: unmet needs, fear, desire to avoid, etc.

The counselor then helps the couple develop a more secure bond by creating a space of vulnerability and responsiveness where couples can share their feelings and ask for their needs to be met.

The couple apply communication strategies provided by the counselor to their daily living.

Even when relationship counseling is complete, having maintenance sessions after a couple of months allows partners to keep in check with their new habits and skills of constructive communication and avoid relapse.
