Catching your partner watching porn can be embarrassing, but it can also come with some complex feelings. Some people can feel left out, surprised at what their partner is watching, feeling cheated on, ashamed, or angry due to their personal feelings towards pornography. As couples therapists, we get the struggle and we help address it in couples counseling in Spokane.
There are a range of reactions a person can have towards porn, no matter their gender or sexual orientation.
What is important to remember, once you discover or catch your partner watching porn, is your feelings are normal. Some people feel shame about being upset that their partner enjoys adult entertainment. In contrast, others feel shame that they are watching it all. Pornography is a complex social issue that can be even more so in relationships of all sorts.
Before confronting your partner about their watching pornography, let’s take a step back and think about what has upset you about it and how to communicate with your partner about it.
Is Watching Porn Cheating?
That is entirely up to you and your partner. The bigger question – did you know it was going? The feelings around pornography are just as varied as types of relationships. Some couples watch porn together, some people agree that porn can be enjoyed in certain situations, while others feel it is an act of betrayal. Even when couples don’t really care if their significant other watches porn or not, the type being consumed could be the problem.
For example, let’s say a husband catches his wife enjoying male-male-female porn or BDSM porn, but he never knew she enjoyed those sexual acts. That can feel like an embarrassing betrayal since she never shared these interests. On the other hand, if a wife catches her husband enjoying porn that features women who look nothing like her, she can feel unattractive or not enough for him. In either scenario, it’s easy to see why some people regard watching porn as a type of cheating.
The subject matter may not be as important as the act of keeping it secret is. If this is compounded by other issues in the relationship or a lack of sexual interaction, then it can feel even more like cheating.
What this question really boils down to is: do you and your partner consider it cheating? If so, why? If you’re unsure whether it is or not, or have never discussed it, then it’s important to discuss how pornography can or cannot fit into your relationship. This is especially important if catching your partner watching porn, and it has never been discussed. If your alarms are going off and you feel violated, then maybe it is cheating.
Signs Porn is Hurting the Relationship: When It Isn’t Healthy
One of the points discussed in the previous section is shame and lack of sexual intimacy. It’s important to underscore shame, in that if your partner is watching something you didn’t know they were interested in, it could be shame on their part or embarrassment. While this may indicate needing a safe place for conversation with your partner, reassuring them it’s ok, it can also indicate that couples therapy is a good idea, especially if this is compounded by an overall lack of communication.
There is an ongoing debate about whether or not pornography is harmful to people, relationships, and women, but barring that discussion- when is porn a problem? Outside of how you personally feel about pornography, it can be a problem for your relationship when other cues surround it:
- Lack of sexual intimacy
- Excessive amount of time at the computer, in private, watching porn. This can also be a sign of addiction
- Having feelings of loneliness/lack of emotional intimacy
- Unrealistic standards being imposed on you by another partner/feeling inadequate
Porn can be a lot of fun for couples to share together or to entertain themselves solo, but when it begins interfering with your relationship then it’s time to communicate with your partner about porn habits.
How to Talk To Your Partner About Watching Porn
Pornography is a touchy subject for many and can be difficult to talk about. If you have concerns about your partner’s porn habits or feel upset that they enjoy adult entertainment at all, it’s important to have an open discussion without judgment. Getting your partner to open up will require you to create a safe space for them to do so.
This is an opportunity to calm any worries you may have, understand each other better, and deepen your relationship. Perhaps they are embarrassed to share some sexual interests with you or feel inadequate themselves, escaping into porn instead.
Calm and open-hearted is the way to approach this conversation. You want to use “I” statements when expressing your emotions and begin the conversation with how you feel about them watching porn. It’s key to not be judging or scolding in your tone or words, you want to share how it makes you feel and learn why they are watching it.
Actively listen to your partner about their adult entertainment habits, and provide clear boundaries for your relationship. Compromise that accommodates both your needs, whether that is only watching porn together or only when apart traveling. It’s up to both of you where and how porn plays a role in your relationship.
The important thing is you’ve discussed it and learned more about each other, deepening your relationship.
The Watch Porn Disagreement: What to Do
Sometimes compromise isn’t reached due to different views on porn consumption, which can lead to resentment and arguments. This isn’t to say that these feelings and fights happen instantly, but not finding common ground is a gateway to them.
If you and your partner disagree on porn, couples therapy offers a judgment-free zone that can help both people address their attitudes toward it and modify porn-watching patterns. A relationship therapist can help identify the nature and context of watching adult entertainment, teach conflict-resolution skills, and improve communication all around.
It’s an unfortunate myth that relationship counseling is a last resort rather than a tool to use before getting to that point. If you’re upset that your partner is watching porn and are unsure why or cannot reach an agreement on how porn plays a role in your relationship, don’t be afraid to get help with that conversation.
